Have you ever been halfway through a painting and then added a shadow going the wrong way? It’s an easy thing to mess up mid stroke. So try this easy and great tip from Joyce Hicks’ video workshop “HIlltop Homestead.”

Draw a sun at the edge of your board where you want it in the sky. This will remind you of the direction. It’s more than a value thing. “It’s very important because you want either warm or you want cool and where that sun is striking has a lot to do with that,” says Hicks.
