Always seeking the beauty in the natural world, Dan Gerhartz captures the effect of two light sources on the model, one warm and the other cool, in a sensitive portrayal of one of his favorite subjects, his model Bud.
Painted from the live model in Dan's personal studio, we see the affectionate interchange between artist and model that produces the warm, sensitive expression on the model's face.
Painting under these circumstances, with competing light sources and a lively model, Dan handles these challenges with the aplomb of a master painter. And even with this heavy load of visual information to process, he is able to articulate his thought process and give direction to the painter/viewer that will inform their own painting efforts.
The subject of backlight and competing light temperatures is one that many painters never tackle, due to the sheer magnitude of visual perception it requires. Dan gives succinct and understandable direction to the viewers that will encourage them to try this effect for themselves.

Dan and Scott both received their art education at the Chicago Academy of Art, and while coming from the same art tradition, each has forged his own style. Listen to these modern masters as they describe the process, their thoughts and concepts when faced with two strong light sources of strikingly different color temperature.
Fimed in their respective private studios, the videos offer a unique experience to see how each sets up the model
within their own workspace.
