This painting illustrates the abstract quality of floral compositions
by utilizing rules of good composition of color, value and mass.
Most any floral bouquet will exhibit these qualities if they are
allowed to take their natural forms within a bouquet, although
many "arrangements" of flowers by less accomplished commercial
florists often feel stiff and plastic, even when using fresh flowers.
This project is a good one for learning some basic techniques
in painting floral compositions.

Roses have been a favorite of lovers and painters since the beginning
of time. The perfect form of the rose is a challenge to the artist
and the beautiful execution of a painted rose is its own best
reward.
This project was painted directly from life with no preliminary
detailed drawing. The lesson to be learned in this project is
a method of painting that uses many alla-prima techniques, along
with traditional glazing and opaque overpainting methods.
